چکیده

The ontogeny of the proboscis in Nucella lapillus was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The proboscis develops by elongation of the body wall surrounding the mouth, whilst the rhynchocoel is formed by imagination of the body wall surrounding the proboscis. Elongation of the snout during development of the proboscis results in the anterior movement of the anterior oesophagus and part of the mid-oesophagus (the valve of Leiblein) which is drawn through the circum-oesophageal nerve ring. The acinous salivary glands and the radular sac also come to lie anterior to the nerve ring. The mid-oesophageal gland of Leiblein and the glandular dorsal folds are not drawn through the nerve ring, and develop behind it. The anterior oesophagus elongates at a later stage of development to produce the oesophageal length required for extension of the adult proboscis. Modifications to this sequence of events, or changes in the rate of growth of the various parts of the foregut, might account for the differences between the neogastropod and neotaenioglossan pleurembolic proboscis. The intraembolic proboscis found in the Conoidea and the Pseudolivoidea may have been derived via a modification of the developmental sequence which produces the muricoidean pleurembolic proboscis.

Historical shell size reduction of the dogwhelk (Nucella lapillus) across the southern UK

Body size reduction is predicted to be one of the most common ecological responses to climate change, yet examples within some taxonomic groups, such as marine molluscs, are rare. Here, we document a significant reduction in shell size of the rocky shore gastropod Nucella lapillus across the southern UK using natural history collections and modern field data. These results are correlated with t...

AFLPs Reveal Different Population Genetic Structure under Contrasting Environments in the Marine Snail Nucella lapillus L.

Dispersal has received growing attention in marine ecology, particularly since evidence obtained with up-to-date techniques challenged the traditional view. The dogwhelk Nucella lapillus L., a sedentary gastropod with direct development, is a good example: dispersal was traditionally assumed to be limited until studies with microsatellites disputed this idea. To shed some light on this controve...

First visual record of rare purple-colored dogwhelks ( Nucella lapillus) on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada

The dogwhelk is a rocky intertidal gastropod of the North Nucella lapillus Atlantic coast. Individual shell color varies. Common colors range between white and brown, with darker dogwhelks being more affected by heat stress than lighter-colored conspecifics. Other reported shell colors are purple, black, mauve, pink, yellow, and orange from UK coasts, red and gray from the Bay of Fundy coast of...

A New Record of Morula anaxares with a Description of the Radula of Three Other Species from Goa, Central West Coast of India (Gastropoda: Muricidae)

The present paper describes a new record of Morula anaxares (Kiener 1835) (Muricidae) from Goa, Central West coast of India aided by spiral cord ontogeny, aperture morphology of shell and SEM of radula. This species was previously reported from Andaman, Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Madras coasts. In addition, detailed structures of radula of other three species namely Orania subnodulosa (Melvill 18...

Thermal stress and predation risk trigger distinct transcriptomic responses in the intertidal snail Nucella lapillus.

Thermal stress and predation risk have profound effects on rocky shore organisms, triggering changes in their feeding behaviour, morphology and metabolism. Studies of thermal stress have shown that underpinning such changes in several intertidal species are specific shifts in gene and protein expression (e.g. upregulation of heat-shock proteins). But relatively few studies have examined genetic...
